What is Kanban

Kanban is a popular Agile methodology helping teams to improve tasks planning and productivity management. Kanban is based on complete work and information exchange transparency in real-time mode. The tasks are put on a separate list where every developer can take them from.
Unlike Scrum when the teams are required to complete Sprints successfully, Kanban is more tasks-oriented.

Kanban methodologies

In Scrum many teams encountered the problems of overhead of discussions, meetings, huge time wastes when the Sprints meet (closing and opening a Sprint might take up to 2 days), situations when the customer does not have enough time to act efficiently as a Product Owner and to get the Sprin Backlog ready, etc.
That is why software methodologies use this extremely agile framework as Kanban. It is based on the concept of continuous releases. The work is articulated on kanban boards where the statuses are presented as columns and rows. These boards visualize the work, standardize the process and help find and eliminate impediments.
Kanban methodology is much simpler. It has only three rules to organize the process. To compare, there are 9 basic rules in Scrum, 13 in XPand more than 120 in classical RUP. Software Kanban has many more advantages, like cutting lead time of every specific tass which speeds up the project flow on the whole, swift test engineers’ feedback, explicit swarming behavior.
Kanban is based upon Toyota Production System whin in its turn was inspired by a supermakets method “to stock the items needed by its customers when they are needed in the quantity needed”. That is the reason why Kanban allows to put a task on hold if there are more urgent tasks at some point of time.
