IT Project Manager's toolkit

The manager's position whether a Scrum Master, Team / Tech Lead or Project Manager, is often a logical and desirable career continuation in the IT world. On the flip side, it is a kind of challenge that forces you to leave the comfort zone and start enhancing extremely different skills. How can we speed up the process of obtaining the first managerial position? About this we will be talking in our webinar;) Namely:

  • Is it worth becoming a manager? Maybe, will I be more comfortable on my current position?
  • My expectations, fears and concerns - how not to drown under them?
  • What do you need to do to become a manager?
  • The main functions of a manager. Self-development: how, what and in which areas should you improve?
  • Risk management: what if I do not like being a manager? Is there a bugout plan?

section1:
Employee Motivation

Much has been written, said and studied about motivation, but the question has not lost its relevance to this day.
Each manager asks himself the questions:

  • What motivates this particular employee?
  • Have I defined it correctly? What is important for my lead specialist? How else can I motivate my team? etc.

As a part of our module we will consider the following questions:

  • Tangible vs intangible motivation: when and what should you apply?
  • Human motivations (the David McClelland theory) and ways to define them. An individual approach:
  • how can you motivate an employee based on his motivators?
  • Employee motivation ideas that don’t involve rewards.

Effective Employee Feedback: How, When, What for.

It seems that everyone has heard 1000 times how important it is to give feedback to employees. In some companies, this practice is musthave and it is even a manager’s and / or HR specialist’s direct responsibility. However, for some reasons, voluntarily - compulsory meetings are skipped, and even if they occur, they are not always conducted the way we would like them to be.

How can you fix the situation? Let's talk about this ;) Together with you we will devote a particular attention to the following questions:

  • Is feedback really important?
  • What does feedback give to a manager? How can you give constructive feedback?
  • When should you not give feedback?
  • Feedback in the form of coaching: how is it implemented in practice? "

The Lifecycle of a Team

Oftentimes, we work with each individual team member and his or her motivators. What about the group dynamics, the team as a whole? After all, a manager should know about these processes, moreover - they must be consciously managed ;)

  • The lifecycle of a team (the Tuckman’s model)
  • How should a manager behave at different stages of team development?
  • A successful team, what does it mean?
  • Types of teams according to M.E. Lytvak

All these interesting questions we will consider in this module.

Time Management

Regardless of the project and methodology, a manager should take into account the project risks and effectively minimize them, and, ideally, prevent them. At the same time, the topic itself, if you figure it out, is not so frightening as it might seem at first glance ;) Within this module, we will consider simple practical tools that will help a manager to detect risks and effectively work on them. Their main plus is that we tried them in practice, both on various projects and in multiple companies ;)

In this module, we will learn:

  • What the risks are.
  • How to identify risks in different categories.
  • How to manage risks without creating complex formulas and scary systems :)
  • RACI matrix
  • Dependency Matrices in Agile
  • The practice of creating risk management plans
