Essentials of Business Analytics

What a business analyst is and how to become one.
One of the youngest and the most incomprehensible professions in the IT market of Ukraine is a business analyst. The profession combines two main components of software development: business and development. It justly becomes more and more attractive to people who do not always like the routine of a QA engineer or a software developer. And, at the same time, it raises customers’ interests who now see not only powerful expertise of developers in Ukrainian companies, but also all makings of product management and creative contribution to their product. Thus, at our meeting we will define:

  • what a business analyst is in Ukrainian IT companies;
  • which key skills they need to possess;
  • what are the main ways to progress your BA career;
  • and, certainly, how to become an analyst in contemporary realities.
  • Finally, we will season it with plenty of real-life examples, failures and success stories!

section1:
The start of the project and the analytical phase

How should I start a new project? How should I identify and plan analytical activities? And, how should I start creating the main artifacts of the project?

The answers to these questions are the next important stage of the analyst's work. Above all, it includes the planning process of analytical activities, the definition of an approach and the process of business analysis that will be used by the analyst and the team throughout the project. Additionally, initial workshops for a customer should be conducted that help to determine the key functions of a future product.

The important part of this phase is understanding and maintaining a hierarchy of requirements that will allow you and all project participants to see a full picture of the product. Along with that, we will clarify how to start eliciting functional requirements of a product and specifications. We will learn the prioritization principles and preliminary planning of releases.

Cooperation with a Customer, Business Requirements

Business analysis and business requirements are, first of all, about working with a customer. Getting to know each other and mutual understanding are the first goals for a business analyst on a project.

In this module, we will answer the following questions:

  • Who are stakeholders and a customer from a Business Analyst’s point of view?
  • Where does work with the customer begin and how should I establish contact with him?
  • How should I understand customer needs? And, most importantly, how to accommodate the needs to different groups.

We will learn the basic tools that allow us to streamline our work at this stage and understand how the motivation of individual stakeholders affects the project. And, certainly, we will talk about the source of which requirements is a customer and what documentation a business analyst creates at the initiation stage of a project.

section1:
Product Description and Specification

The availability of business requirements and understanding the full picture is an important part of the analysis. In addition, it is impossible to start developing a real product without going into details.

The way functional requirements are written and the tools a business analyst uses for that are very different depending on the project and the domain to which the product belongs.

In this module, we will describe the most common means of product requirements specification: documents, diagrams and mockups, taking into account both classical and Agile methodologies.
Additionally, we will answer the question: how to use these tools most efficiently when working with your team and customer.
